S44 Demon Badge; 14th century

This little badge is one of a number of known examples depicting demons. Exactly why they would have been popular subjects for badges is debatable, but they can perhaps be seen as apotropaic or evil averting - a tame demon to ward off or fascinate the unwanted attentions of harmful demons.

The original was found in Ypres and is in the collection of the Yper Museum.

20mm high x 15mm across.
